Dining with the kids in the East - the Best of the Best

Everyone needs to eat. Kids need to eat. Parents need a break from the monotonous chore of cooking. The Eastern Suburbs is filled with plenty of restaurants ranging from the everyday cafe to the hatted fine dining restaurants. We search out great restaurants where families can dine with the kids comfortably.....

As a local family we have dined our way from Maroubra to Watsons Bay and have created a list of our favourite restaurant picks to hang out with the kids.

1. Kokoroya  - Maroubra

What kid doesn't like sushi?? Kokoroya on Anzac Pde Maroubra is a rare species of restaurant. Catering for the needs of families with kids of all ages, they provide plastic cutlery and cups and...wait for it...Ipads for kids to order their own meal! To top it off there is a gated off, padded play area with kids movies on loop, if parents need a little longer to enjoy the extensive Japanese menu. Their dishes are fresh tasty and healthy to top it all off.

2. Coogee Pavillion   -   Coogee

Too cool for school the Pavillion really caters for everyone under the age of 85! Funky industrial interiors, teamed with stunning modern cuisine makes this an easy place to hang out, drink and be merry. Added bonus for the kids is large area at the back of the restaurant filled the ping pong tables, over-sized magnetic Scrabble building blocks and Air Hockey. The small but well thought out kids menu caters for most tastes. This is not the cheapest option around, but if you want to be in the hip social centre and not embarrassed with noisy kids, this is it!

3. The Clovelly Hotel   -   Clovelly

Calippos, juice poppers and activity packs all included to make your kids that much happier at the Cloey. We think there must of been a mum involved in the menu decisions here. The menu is broad enough to cater for the fussiest eater in the East, the Cloey is a warm, relaxed local pub.

4. Robin Hood Hotel   -   Randwick

Are you running from school pickup to soccer training, then have an hour break before you have to drop off to ballet class. Afternoons can be a logistical nightmare and then you have to think about cooking and eating! Bless the Robin Hood - in the central location of Waverley and Charing Cross the Robin Hood offers a great pit-stop to have an affordable mid-week meal where both mum and dad and the kids are satisfied! A great old school pub with a twist of hipster edge.

5. Queens Park Shed   -   Queens Park

A fenced playground that caters for toddlers to tweens. and a rustic cafe with good coffee and fare. Someone brilliant has decided to put the 2 right next to each other - BRILLIANT! The Queens Park Shed is ideally situated right next to Queens Park playground. These clever owners also offer free kids meals for all families dining on a Thursday evening. Stunning food, combined with great service for the whole family.

6. Grandfathers Moustache   -   Rose Bay

An oldy but such a goody! A local establishment which has been a staple in Rose Bay for over 40 years. A very old-style, traditional Italian homely restaurant. Quick service, consistent food quality and no fluff means happy, full kids in a flash..and you can get a amazing slice of Pavlova before you leave.

7. The Shuk - North Bondi

Whilst The Shuk is a few steps away from the beach, locals flock here for good coffee and exquisite Middle-Eastern fare. If you happen to be walking by, you will be lured into this great cafe with the aroma of freshly baking croissants and handmade bread. The cherry on the top here is the grassy garden filled with toys for your little ones to occupy themselves while you get that well-deserved caffeine hit!

8. Vaucluse House Tearooms   -   Vaucluse

Sophisticated, spacious, and surrounded by parks this is a great little spot for breakfast or lunch. With outdoor tables overlooking the beautiful scenery, the kids can eat and enjoy running around the expansive parks, giving parents some time to enjoy the divine scones and tea!
